Sonnet To Isiah Thomas
October 11th 2006 21:18
Ever since I started following professional basketball in the early 1990s, my favorite team has been the New York Knicks. It wasn't a bad time to be a Knicks fan back then, with consistent playoff appearances and a couple of trips to the finals. But that's changed during the past few years, and I wrote a sonnet today about the Knicks' current predicament.
Why must you coach when you don’t get respect?
Most Knicks fans cringe upon hearing your name
You called for practice and four people came
It doesn’t take a brilliant intellect
To know that there isn’t much to expect
Except for another season of shame
Even before the first preseason game
Your playoff hopes could be considered wrecked
The greatest coach that there has even been
Would have lots of trouble dealing with all
Those overpaid men who won’t pass the ball
You’re far from the best. So how will you win?
The Knicks need help and they need that help fast
Or there’s a good chance that they’ll finish last
Why must you coach when you don’t get respect?
Most Knicks fans cringe upon hearing your name
You called for practice and four people came
It doesn’t take a brilliant intellect
To know that there isn’t much to expect
Except for another season of shame
Your playoff hopes could be considered wrecked
The greatest coach that there has even been
Would have lots of trouble dealing with all
Those overpaid men who won’t pass the ball
You’re far from the best. So how will you win?
The Knicks need help and they need that help fast
Or there’s a good chance that they’ll finish last
