Lots of Sonnets - October 2006

Let's Go Mets!

October 17th 2006 23:30
I've been a little reserved with this... don't want to bring about any jinxes.

Midwestern rain gave you the rest you need
Glavine’s geriatric arm should be fine
For about six innings if not quite nine
The bullpen is fresh to protect a lead
With game four momentum on which to feed
And an offense that is certain to shine
You’ll get closer to popping sparkling wine
If there are naysayers, pay them no heed

David was slumping but he’s set things right
Beltran can belt and Delgado’s not thin
Or fat just the right size to help you win
A World Series berth should be in your sight

El Duque might return to help win rings
Reyes and company could be like kings

Game 5 is in 30 minutes... not a 100% must win but it will feel a lot better to just need to win one of the final 2 games of the National League Championship Series.

How I Became A Millionaire

October 16th 2006 05:17
The following is true...except for some possible slight alterations for the sake of fitting the format and possibly because of my imperfect memory.

Gambled with a gift given by the site
I lost what they gave me three or four times
Treated each grand like it was less than dimes
Finally my fate began to look bright
Reaped the rewards of playing fairly tight
Trashing cards that were for the dogs like Iams
I caused my foes to be speechless like mimes
When they fell victim to my poker might

I would have had just fifty grand to spare
If I had lost in a tourney last week

But I went on an awesome winning streak
And now I seem to be a millionaire

But I’m not ready to buy a boat yet
It’s play chips on full tilt poker dot net

Poker is on ESPN and therefore I've categorized it as a sport.

Sonnet Inspired by Alcohol

October 13th 2006 04:29
How much of this was inspired by personal experience? Feel free to guess.

The geyser inside me may spray no more
But inside my head the hammers still pound
I crossed a line after my fourth was downed
Of 151’s presence I am sure
They were concocted behind a closed door
You might’ve heard judgment is rarely sound
Where a single sober soul can’t be found
And that’s why my appetite is so poor

No measure of pleasure is worth this hurt
But did last night bring me pleasure at all?
Maybe I’m lucky that I can’t recall
Events between 2 and waking by dirt

But I wasn’t arrested. Man, that’s great!
And quite enough reason to celebrate

If questions are asked, they will be answered.

Reasons To Write

October 12th 2006 01:37
A couple of weeks ago, the Romantic Writer blogger whose name I may or may not have forgotten how to spell suggested that I write a blog entry about the writing process. This isn't exactly that, but it may be as close as I'm going to come to it in a blog devoted to sonnets. That, of course, may change if inspiration strikes but I've delayed posting the sonnet that I just wrote enough already. So, here it is:

To express loss and what I hope to gain

Sonnet To Isiah Thomas

October 11th 2006 21:18
Ever since I started following professional basketball in the early 1990s, my favorite team has been the New York Knicks. It wasn't a bad time to be a Knicks fan back then, with consistent playoff appearances and a couple of trips to the finals. But that's changed during the past few years, and I wrote a sonnet today about the Knicks' current predicament.

Why must you coach when you don’t get respect

This is my first post to this new domain blog. It's a sonnet that I wrote today. The question of how much of it, if any, is based on my actual experiences is up to the reader (hopefully readers) to decide.

Amoebic is how your love is defined
